Description
The slavers are coming!
Young Abikamile listens as her mother prays to her ancestors’ spirits to protect the people of her village from the violent men from the north who intend to enslave the Yao tribe.
Her mother has a plan – they must disappear – destroy the village and vanish into the deep forest. Only old Chimwala, the oldest of the village elders, will remain, as if always she has lived there alone.
But the tribe will need more than faith to save themselves, they will need courage too.
A moving tale from the history of the Yao people of East Africa, retold by Ann Grifalconi.
