Dear Diary – Everything’s going wrong. I wish Mum and Dad would come back. I wish Venetia Beast would disappear. I wish I could change my name. ‘If wishes were horses…’ said my Gran. What could she mean?
Living with your grandmother (abandoned by your feckless parents), sharing a room with your little brother, losing your best friend at school to the new girl – things don’t seem to be going too well for Cowslip.
It’s a hot, hot summer. Cowslip discovers a roof garden on the top of the block of flats where she’s living. She makes it her own and daydreams of the pony she’d love to have and the things she’d like to go right with her life.
And can dreams come true? Well, a pony appears out of the sky – but he’s bright blue and isn’t very sympathetic. But he helps her, especially when her little brother is in danger, and he does make an appearance as a normal horse for Cowslip to ride in front of her friends in a pony show. And her parents reappear. So things turn out all right after all – but not in the way that Cowslip could have expected.
A magical fantasy story with real appeal for girls – especially those who fantasize about having their own pony.
